Minutes of the monthly meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Olive held
Monday, May 7, 2002, 7:30 pm at the Town Meeting Hall in Shokan, NY.

On a Chase/Johansen motion the Town Board unanimously approved the minutes of
the previous month’s meetings as submitted by the Town Clerk.
The following correspondence was read and filed;

Supervisor Leifeld introduced correspondence from the NYS Public Service
Commission regarding cable television. He stated the town had engaged in a
contract with a consultant to work with the cable company; however, the
consultant did not actually do anything. Council Member Burkhardt stated she had
contacted the Public Service Commission and met with them for an informational
meeting. Supervisor Leifeld stated he is forming a Cablevision Committee and is
appointing Council Member Linda Burkhardt as Chair with members Council Member
Bruce La Monda and Tom Planz.

The American Legion Annual Memorial Day Service will be Monday, May 27th at
West Shokan.
On a La Monda/Chase motion the Town Board approved payment of the following
pre-audited bills: Prepaid Voucher #159, $204.00; General Fund Voucher
#160-#224, $23,774.26; Street Lighting Voucher #4, $33.45; and Highway Voucher
#96-#143, $16,706.79.
Supervisor Leifeld noted cash received for March 2002 as $40,259.90 and interest
received through March 2002 as $5,931.68.
The following committee reports were submitted:
FIRST AID representative Council Member Chase stated that May is designated Lyme
disease awareness month and on May 16th, 9 – 10 a.m. on PBS there would be a
broadcast regarding Lyme disease. She stated Ulster County had a reported 160
reported cases of Lyme disease this past year.
PARKS & RECREATION liaison Council Member Chase reported on the April 17th
Recreation Committee meeting. (#36-02) She stated the committee appointed Erin
Allison Jones as Certified Pool Supervisor, notice for new counselors will be
posted at the high school, and letters will go out to counselors who worked last
year. The pool operators’ course was taken by Highway employees Jack Giuditta
and James Henderson as well as by Erin Jones. She noted the swimming pool is
scheduled to open June 1st with June 23rd being the dedication.
FIRE DEPARTMENT report #37-02 noted the department responded to 42 calls during
the month of March. Town Clerk Rozzelle stated that 19 of those responses were
for automatic alarms. Council Member La Monda stated the Town Board has
discussed the issue of false alarms and suggested a fine be implemented on
repetitive automatic alarms. Everett Cook stated the problem with repeat alarms
is that when they occur at the same place repeatedly, volunteers might not
respond. Discussion occurred on the possibility of looking into drafting
legislation regarding this issue.
TRANSFER STATION liaison Council Member Burkhardt issued report #38-02 noting
March revenues as $4,110.00 with 14 roll-offs disposed of at a cost of
$3,479.70. She stated the Transfer Station would be accepting propane tanks that
no longer meet state regulations.
POLICE DEPARTMENT report #39-02 noted the largest number of activities being
assisting Fire and First Aid, 41; assisting Police Departments, 31; Property
Checks, 23; Personal Assists, 23; and Vehicle & Traffic, 22. He stated that
next week the Police Department would put on the bicycle safety program at
Bennett School. Council Member La Monda stated approximately three years ago the
town received a grant from the Department of Justice under the “Cops Fast
Program”. He noted the town department would be receiving another $5,000.00.
HIGHWAY liaison Council Member Johansen issued April report #40-02 noting the
highway department this past month has been preparing the parks for the season,
has replaced the roof on the old pool building, has installed a replacement
culvert on Brown Road, and ditching has been done on troublesome spots created
from the rain.
TOWN CLERK Rozzelle thanked the family of Hugh Kelly for donating a flag to the
town. This flag will be used for the Memorial Day Service in West Shokan.
On a Leifeld/Chase motion the Town Board unanimously appointed Ruth Williams as
Assistant Dog Warden.
Supervisor Leifeld stated the American Legion Hall contract is due after 33
years. He noted the contract is being left the same with the exception of one
change. He noted the old contract had a section stating the town will cover the
holes in the back where the outhouse stands; this section will be removed. He
noted the town pays $1 a year for the lease. On a Leifeld/La Monda motion the
Town Board unanimously approved renewing the lease for the American Legion Hall.
On a Leifeld/Burkhardt motion the Town Board unanimously approved empowering the
Supervisor to enter into a lease with the American Legion for use of the
American Legion Hall on Mountain Road in Shokan, NY. Roll vote being: Johansen,
yes; Chase, yes; La Monda, yes; Burkhardt, yes; and Leifeld, yes.
On a Leifeld/La Monda motion the Town Board unanimously approved the transfer of
$250.00 from A5010.2 to A5010.4.
On a Leifeld/La Monda motion the Town Board unanimously approved the transfer of
$16,875.00 from Reserve “A” to Highway Fund DA5130.2.
All business pertinent having been discussed the Town Board adjourned at 8:02 pm
on a Leifeld/Johansen motion in memory of Maria T. Baum, Beatrice Dunham, Sherry
a Strumph Levit, Magdalina VanTent, and Elmer Veeder Wemple.
